BT TV is set to become the consolidated home for live television, streaming platforms, and premium content, taking over from EE TV for existing BT Broadband customers. This transition, effective October 15, maintains current service packages, pricing structures, and existing hardware, ensuring a seamless experience for users. The move aims to streamline entertainment offerings under a unified BT brand, integrating various forms of media consumption into one accessible platform.
The service offers two distinct set-top box options to cater to diverse user needs. The BT TV Box Pro is designed for comprehensive media management, allowing users to pause, rewind live television, access a wide array of streaming applications, and record over 600 hours of content. For those primarily interested in streaming and on-demand viewing without the need for live TV recording capabilities, the more compact BT TV Box Edge provides a focused experience on applications and catch-up services.
Transitioning to the Unified BT TV Experience
Existing BT Broadband customers subscribed to EE TV will experience a smooth transition to BT TV, with their current channel lineups, saved recordings, and active streaming subscriptions like Netflix, NOW, and HBO Max remaining intact. The primary visible changes will involve cosmetic updates to reflect BT branding on the interface and the renaming of the associated content store. This ensures that the core viewing experience remains consistent while aligning services under the BT umbrella.
For users accessing their content via the EE TV app on mobile devices, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung TVs, or web browsers, a simple migration to the new BT TV app or website will be required. During this process, personal settings, scheduled recordings, purchased, and rented content will automatically transfer. However, any previously downloaded offline content will need to be re-downloaded, and Apple TV users will note the discontinuation of the EE TV app access after the transition date.
Enhanced Features and Market Positioning of BT TV
BT TV provides a centralized search functionality across both set-top box models, aggregating results from various content providers into a single, user-friendly list. This feature addresses the common challenge of navigating multiple applications and subscriptions, offering a more integrated and less fragmented content discovery process. Luciano Oliveira, Managing Director Products, Consumer at BT, highlighted this as a solution to the complex landscape of digital entertainment.
This initiative completes BT's integrated service portfolio, allowing customers to bundle broadband, mobile, and television services from a single provider. While BT promotes its offering as unique in combining live sports, traditional live TV, and streaming, it acknowledges that competitors like Sky, Freely, and Vodafone are also moving towards similar converged entertainment solutions. The transition for existing EE TV customers will be automatic from October 15, with set-top boxes receiving necessary software updates overnight when left in standby mode.
