Basketball player Isaac Bonga has opted to extend his career in Europe, pledging his commitment to Partizan Belgrade for the upcoming 2025-26 season. This decision comes despite considerable attention from NBA franchises, particularly after his impressive showing at the recent EuroBasket 2025 tournament. Bonga's choice highlights a strategic move to continue his development and influence within a familiar competitive environment, rather than pursuing immediate NBA opportunities.

Isaac Bonga Confirms European Stay Amidst NBA Interest and EuroBasket Glory

German forward Isaac Bonga, aged 25, has officially committed to playing for Partizan Belgrade in the 2025-26 season. This announcement, initially reported by Marc Stein on The Stein Line, follows a period of speculation regarding Bonga's potential return to the NBA. Although multiple NBA teams showed interest, a concrete contract offer did not materialize, leading Bonga to solidify his position with the Serbian club under the renowned coach Zeljko Obradovic.

Bonga's profile significantly rose during EuroBasket 2025, where he was instrumental in leading Germany to their first continental title in over thirty years. His exceptional performance in the final against Türkiye earned him the Player of the Game honors, as he contributed 20 points and five rebounds in their 88-83 victory. This triumph further cemented Germany's dominance in international basketball, adding to their 2023 FIBA World Cup gold medal.

Teammates like Franz Wagner and Maodo Lo lauded Bonga's contributions, with Lo suggesting to Meridian Sport that Bonga 'deserves to be in the NBA.' However, Bonga himself downplayed the NBA rumors, stating, \"That's something so you have something to talk about. Now I just want to enjoy myself with my brothers here, to talk to my family, and then we'll see.\"

Standing 6-foot-8, Bonga previously played in the NBA with the Toronto Raptors (2022), Los Angeles Lakers, and Washington Wizards. Across 143 career games, he averaged 3.1 points and 2.2 rebounds, including 49 starts during the 2019-20 season with Washington. Since his return to Europe, Bonga has showcased marked improvements in his game, particularly in shooting efficiency and defensive versatility. During Germany's EuroBasket campaign, he averaged 9.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists, achieving impressive shooting percentages of 53.3% from the field and 45.2% from beyond the arc.

Basketball scouts have taken note of Bonga's continuous growth, especially his enhanced perimeter game. Marc Stein indicated that if Bonga maintains this upward trajectory, he could attract more robust NBA interest in the 2026 free agency period.

Isaac Bonga's decision to remain with Partizan Belgrade, despite overtures from the NBA, underscores a growing trend where European basketball offers compelling opportunities for player development and competitive success. His commitment not only bolsters Partizan's roster with a proven talent but also signals a player prioritizing consistent growth and impact within a familiar system. This move provides Bonga with a platform to further refine his skills, build on his recent EuroBasket triumph, and potentially re-evaluate his NBA prospects at a later, perhaps more advantageous, juncture. It's a testament to the increasing quality and appeal of European leagues as viable career paths for elite basketball players.
