In a recent candid discussion, Ben Affleck divulged a memorable encounter with fellow actor Bruce Willis, who, with good intentions but ultimately misguided advice, suggested Affleck forgo a role in what would become the Oscar-winning film 'Shakespeare in Love.' This anecdote, shared during a podcast appearance, offers a glimpse into the informal counsel exchanged among Hollywood stars and the unexpected paths careers can take. Affleck's decision to follow his instincts, despite the well-meaning warning, proved to be a pivotal moment, contributing to a cinematic triumph.

The revelation surfaced during Affleck's chat on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, where he recounted a conversation with Willis while they were collaborating on the 1998 sci-fi blockbuster 'Armageddon.' According to Affleck, Willis expressed doubts about his involvement in 'Shakespeare in Love,' which was then in pre-production. Willis reportedly told Affleck, "Man, don't go do that Shakespeare movie, man. You don't wanna do that movie." This interaction occurred just months before the romantic comedy was set to begin filming. Affleck, then in his mid-twenties, chose to disregard the advice from the seasoned actor, a decision that would lead to significant critical acclaim and box office success for 'Shakespeare in Love,' including seven Academy Awards, notably Best Picture.

Affleck acknowledged Willis's perspective, noting that his co-star hadn't actually reviewed the script. He lightheartedly remarked that Willis "was wrong about that one." The film featured a stellar cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes, Judi Dench, and Colin Firth, among others. Beyond career guidance, Affleck also revealed another amusing piece of unsolicited advice from Willis, concerning his vocal tone. Willis, 17 years Affleck's senior, apparently told him, "Your voice is too high," to which Affleck humorously responded, "Bruce, that's just my voice. Can I change that?" Willis's reply, "You don't wanna sound like that, man! I'm helping you out!" underscores a playful yet mentoring dynamic between the two actors. Affleck emphasized his deep affection and respect for Willis, describing him as "the sweetest guy in the world" and acknowledging that Willis genuinely intended to offer helpful tips.

Willis's retirement from acting was announced in March 2022 due to a diagnosis of aphasia, which was later updated to frontotemporal dementia in February 2023. This background adds a poignant layer to Affleck's reflections on their past interactions. The conversation extended beyond professional life, as Affleck also touched upon his personal life, particularly his co-parenting relationship with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner. Affleck, a father to Violet, Finn, and Samuel, lauded Garner's exceptional parenting abilities, quipping that she makes him feel "a little short" in comparison. He humorously rated his own parenting efforts as "about 75 percent as good as [their] mom," with his children jokingly suggesting a lower "40 percent."

Despite their divorce in 2018, Affleck maintains immense admiration for Garner's dedication as a mother. He stressed the importance of mutual respect in their co-parenting dynamic, highlighting their ability to effectively navigate raising their children together. Garner has reciprocated this sentiment, publicly praising Affleck as an "incredible co-parent" who is "wonderful" and "takes care of them." Affleck also spoke about the profound impact of divorce, describing it as an "excruciatingly painful" experience, especially when children are involved. He noted that actors often draw on their life experiences to authentically portray roles, and while the specifics of his own divorce weren't directly mirrored in his work, the emotional depth of such experiences informs his craft. The candidness of these insights offers a multidimensional view of Affleck's journey, both personally and professionally.
