Apple is set to revolutionize how users interact with their conversations through advanced AI features integrated into its latest smartwatches. These innovations, Live Rewind and Siri Recap, offer unprecedented convenience and privacy by processing speech directly on the device without storing audio recordings.

Unlock Your Conversations: Instant Recall and Smart Summaries on Your Wrist

Capturing Fleeting Moments: The Live Rewind Feature

The new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 introduce a groundbreaking feature called Live Rewind. With a simple double-press of the Digital Crown, users can instantaneously obtain a text transcription of the preceding 15 seconds of spoken interaction. This instant text appears directly on the watch display, allowing for immediate review. Furthermore, users have the option to engage Siri for subsequent inquiries pertaining to the transcribed content or to securely save the text within the dedicated Siri application for future reference, negating the need for audio playback.

Prioritizing User Privacy: On-Device Speech Processing

Apple emphasizes a stringent privacy protocol for Live Rewind. The company explicitly states that the feature neither creates nor retains any audio recordings. All speech processing is executed entirely on the device itself, and the original sound data is promptly discarded once the transcription is generated. This on-device processing mechanism also ensures that Apple has no access to the raw audio, reinforcing user confidentiality. Moreover, the resulting transcriptions deliberately avoid attributing specific speakers, a crucial distinction when compared to other AI-powered wearable devices that might maintain permanent audio logs.

Enhancing Everyday Interactions with Siri Recap

Beyond capturing brief moments, Siri Recap extends this ambient listening capability to encompass entire meetings or extended conversations. This feature generates an automated title, a concise summary, and key highlights, all accessible within the new Siri application. While it continuously monitors spoken interactions, the final recap does not include word-for-word transcriptions of the dialogue. Instead, it intelligently synthesizes and summarizes the content, storing only the structured notes within the Siri app.

Flexible Control Over Audio Intelligence Settings

Users are provided with comprehensive control over the Audio Intelligence functionality. This includes the flexibility to enable it throughout the day, activate it manually as needed, or restrict its operation to specific geographical locations. These settings can be configured for always-on usage, scheduled activation, or through a straightforward toggle within the Control Centre. Additionally, a distinct Sound Recognition feature is incorporated to detect significant environmental sounds such as sirens, doorbells, alarms, and the cries of infants, providing crucial alerts to users who are deaf or hard of hearing, even in the absence of a nearby iPhone.

Rollout and Data Security for New AI Capabilities

Both Live Rewind and Siri Recap necessitate the presence of Siri AI on a paired iPhone. Apple plans to introduce these features in a beta phase later this year, initially supporting English, with subsequent language expansions planned as Siri AI becomes more widely available on iPhones. Saved transcriptions and recaps seamlessly synchronize across all of a wearer's devices via iCloud. This connection is secured with end-to-end encryption, ensuring that the notes remain decipherable exclusively on the individual's own devices, aligning with Apple's overarching commitment to end-to-end encryption for iCloud data. Currently, Apple has not confirmed whether Live Rewind and Siri Recap will be made available on older Apple Watch models once Siri AI is fully rolled out on iPhones later this year, implying that these features are presently exclusive to the Series 12 and Ultra 4.
