Apple has officially rolled out its innovative Apple Upgrade financing initiative, a significant evolution from its previous iPhone Upgrade Program. This new plan now provides a wider array of consumers the ability to finance not just iPhones, but also a selection of iPads, Mac computers, and Apple Watches through convenient monthly installments. The program, accessible in the United States, marks a pivotal expansion in how customers can acquire Apple's popular technology, offering flexible payment durations and integrated trade-in options.
The newly launched Apple Upgrade program offers customers varying payment terms tailored to specific devices. For iPhones and Apple Watches, the available financing periods are either 12 or 24 months. Larger devices such as Macs and iPads can be financed over a more extended period, ranging from 24 to 36 months. Upon the conclusion of the lease agreement, customers have several choices: they can opt to return the device, upgrade to a newer model, or purchase the current device outright by settling the remaining balance, which is calculated based on its initial retail price. Apple guarantees that the total amount paid will not exceed the device's Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) before interest charges.
A notable feature of Apple Upgrade is its seamless integration across Apple's sales channels. Customers can utilize this financing option directly through the Apple Store application, on the official Apple website, or at any physical Apple Store location. During the checkout process for a compatible device, individuals can select Apple Upgrade as their preferred payment method, alongside full payment options, Apple Card financing, or eligible carrier promotions. Furthermore, the program incorporates trade-in capabilities, allowing the value of an old device to directly reduce the monthly installment payments from the very beginning. The financial processing for these installment plans is facilitated by Klarna, and applicants undergo a soft credit check that does not impact their credit score, ensuring a smooth and user-friendly experience within Apple's ecosystem.
While the Apple Upgrade program offers enhanced flexibility, it does come with certain stipulations and differences compared to its predecessor. Early upgrades are possible, but require customers to pay off any outstanding installments before making the switch, making upgrades more financially appealing later in the payment cycle. Additionally, iPhone purchases made through this program necessitate the selection of a carrier during checkout, though Apple assures that the devices remain unlocked for use on other networks. Certain entry-level products, such as the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, Apple Watch SE, base iPad, Mac mini, Studio Display, and MacBook Neo, are not eligible for financing under this scheme. Business and education purchases are also excluded. Perhaps the most significant change is the removal of AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss protection, which was previously bundled with the iPhone Upgrade Program. This comprehensive coverage is now offered as an optional add-on, directing users towards Apple's broader AppleCare One subscription service. Existing iPhone Upgrade Program members can continue with their current agreements until expiration, but all new customers will be directed to the Apple Upgrade program.
