Apple apparently explored a new classification of Apple Silicon processors, dubbed the "Extreme" series, designed to outperform their existing "Ultra" chips. These ambitious chips, initially intended for the high-end Mac Pro desktop, never progressed beyond the conceptual stage due to concerns about their commercial viability. The decision to halt development stemmed from the significant manufacturing costs and the limited market demand for such an exceptionally powerful, specialized processor.
According to reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple had been working on both M2 Extreme and M3 Extreme chips. The vision behind these processors was to create a new apex in Apple's chip hierarchy, positioned above the current Ultra models. The internal strategy involved effectively doubling the architecture of the Ultra chips, aiming for processors that would boast twice the CPU and GPU cores, making them the most potent Apple Silicon ever conceived. Although the name "Extreme" was never officially confirmed internally, it was considered the logical designation for a chip designed to surpass the Ultra series.
These high-performance processors were specifically earmarked for the Mac Pro, Apple's flagship desktop computer. Historically, the Mac Pro has served a niche market of professionals engaged in demanding tasks such as 3D rendering, visual effects, advanced software development, and intensive scientific computing. The "Extreme" chips would have catered to this highly specialized user base, providing an unprecedented level of processing power for their complex workflows.
However, Apple eventually concluded that the commercial justification for producing such advanced chips was lacking. The cost of manufacturing these extremely powerful processors would have been substantial, and the relatively small audience for the Mac Pro meant that recouping this investment would have been challenging. This economic assessment ultimately led to the abandonment of the project.
The cancellation of the "Extreme" series has had broader implications for Apple's desktop computing strategy. Instead of pushing the Mac Pro into an even higher performance tier with these new processors, Apple opted to align its performance capabilities more closely with the Mac Studio, utilizing Ultra-class chips.
