In a groundbreaking initiative, Rhazes AI, a health technology startup based in the U.K. and Qatar, has successfully implemented AI-powered clinical assistants at the Al Hamshari Hospital in southern Lebanon. This deployment represents the first instance of such advanced AI technology being utilized in a conflict-affected region. The primary objective is to enhance operational efficiency and mitigate the escalating strain on medical professionals, who are currently contending with a surge in casualties and a heightened demand for intricate medical and psychological support services, largely attributable to the ongoing Gaza conflict.
These innovative agentic AI systems are strategically integrated into both the outpatient and emergency departments of the hospital. Their core function is to streamline various labor-intensive administrative responsibilities traditionally handled by doctors. This includes real-time transcription of patient consultations, providing valuable assistance in diagnostic reasoning, and formulating evidence-based treatment strategies. Furthermore, these AI tools automate critical administrative tasks such as generating admission notes, processing billing codes, and creating structured summaries of patient information, thereby significantly reducing the workload for an already overburdened healthcare staff.
The pilot program, which is scheduled to run from August to November 2025, will function as a non-randomized, controlled implementation trial. During this period, the impact of the AI assistants will be rigorously evaluated based on several key performance indicators. These include the reduction in documentation time, an increase in clinical decision confidence among medical personnel, and an improvement in overall patient flow throughout the hospital. This transformative project is financially backed by Rhazes AI and is being executed in close collaboration with the Palestine Red Crescent Society.
This pioneering deployment of AI in a conflict zone underscores the immense potential of technology to address critical humanitarian challenges. By empowering healthcare providers with intelligent tools, it not only optimizes their workflow but also ensures that patients receive more timely and accurate care, even under the most arduous circumstances. This initiative serves as a powerful testament to human ingenuity and compassion, offering a beacon of hope and demonstrating how innovation can be harnessed to alleviate suffering and improve lives in areas profoundly impacted by conflict.
